Eliza Melissa Coleman Tompkins

This page gives details about Eliza Melissa Coleman Tompkins gleaned from various internet sources.
Immigrant and passenger lists yielded a couple of things.
One was a reference to BRACY, ISABEL. Immigrants in Madison County, New York, which lists Wife Eliza; Child Eliza; Child George; Child Hannah and primary immigrant George Coleman arriving in Madison County in 1853.

Another was the passenger list from the ship American Congress which lists the same family arriving from London on 7 Dec 1852. It gives their ages as: George - 31, Eliza - 28, Eliza - 6 (which matches what her obituary says), George - 3, and Hannah - 2.
U. S. Census records provided the following:
The 1860 census lists a Coleman family in the town of Madison, Madison County, N. Y. consisting of George - 37, Mary - 30, George - 11, Hannah - 9, Elizabeth - 7, and John H - 1. The two Georges and Hannah are the right ages so I believe this is our family. The same census shows an Eliza Coleman age 13 (right age for our Eliza) living with a Martin family (Drias, Jane, and Laster). What happened to mother Eliza? Did she die and George remarry to Mary? Is that why Little Eliza is living with another family? Is Elizabeth Dwight's mother, Libbie? The 1900 census shows a 43 year old Libbie C as Dwight's mother. So the 7 year age for Elizabeth in 1860 doesn't match the 43 year old Libbie in 1900. Haven't found a 3 year old Libbie in the 1860 records so there's more puzzle to solve.

There's also more census info to add here too about Eliza in 1870 as a domestic in Alonzo Peck's house. Stay tuned...
